Plant Features

Color Guard Yucca features long rapier-like spikes with green margins and yellowy-red centers. In late summer Color Guard bears very large, white flowers. As with most all Adam's Needle, this rakish plant works very well as a security feature under windows or around the perimeter of a yard. Long known as Spanish Bayonet or Spanish Dagger, the Yucca's deceptively beautiful and unique appearance can serve to bite the unwary, much like a guard dog but without the lawsuit or raising your insurance rates!

Planting Instructions:

  • - Plant in spring or fall for optimal growth
  • - Space plants 2-3 feet apart to allow for their mature size

Soil Preparation:

  • - Prefers well-draining soil; sandy or rocky soil is ideal
  • - Ideal soil pH: 6.0-7.0
  • - Tolerates poor soil conditions but avoid overly wet soils

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water deeply but infrequently; allow soil to dry out between waterings
  • - Very drought-tolerant once established

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Use a low-nitrogen, slow-release fertilizer in spring
  • - Over-fertilizing can lead to weak growth and reduced blooming

Pruning and Training:

  • - Remove dead or damaged leaves to maintain a tidy appearance
  • - Cut back flower stalks after blooming to encourage new growth

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Watch for scale insects and spider mites; treat with insecticidal soap if necessary

Blooming Indicators:

  • - Produces tall spikes of white, bell-shaped flowers in summer
  • - Blooms attract pollinators like bees and butterflies

Light Requirements:

  • - Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade
  • - Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Hardy in USDA zones 5-10
  • - Can tolerate heat and drought; protect from extreme cold
  • - Not frost-tolerant; cover or bring indoors when temperatures drop below 20°F

Companion Plants for Color Guard Yucca:

  • - Sedum: Drought-tolerant and thrives in similar conditions
  • - Lavender: Adds color and attracts pollinators
  • - Salvia: Complements yucca's architectural form
  • - Ornamental Grasses: Provide texture and contrast

Looks great

It was my first time ordering plants on this website. I was looking into buying some plants from this website for a long time! Finally I did place my order. I wanted a Yucca that would be a little different from the usual ones and beautiful. The order was shipped promptly! The plants were VERY carefully packed and had been well watered before their trip! When I opened the package, they looked as if they were just bought from a local nursery! :))) very healthy and fresh! I am impressed with the efficient work the company did!

Wonderful Yucca Plants

This plant was very healthy and moist upon arrival. I love that it is evergreen and will brighten things up in the winter.
