Plant Features

Our Ruby Slippers Hydrangea Plant is an Oakleaf hydrangea with astounding color, not only on its astronomically large 9 inch flower spires, but on its astoundingly large oak-shaped leaves. First, the blossoms start out white! Yes, you heard right, they're white before changing to pink and then blushing brightly with ruby hues. And then, the foliage emerges light spring-green, morphing to deep, forest green, before putting on its fall wardrobe of opulent russet. Considered a dwarf, there is nothing puny at all about the brilliant show Ruby Slippers puts on!

Companion Planting: Aster, Astilbe, Dicentra, Viburnum

Planting Instructions:

  • - Best planted in early spring or fall to ensure strong root establishment
  • - Space plants 4-6 feet apart to allow for their mature size and spreading habit

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 5.5-6.5, slightly acidic
  • - Prefers rich, well-drained soil; amend heavy soils with compost to improve drainage

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water deeply and consistently during the first growing season to establish roots
  • - Once established, moderately drought-tolerant but thrives with consistent moisture

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring
  • - Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can encourage leafy growth over blooms

Pruning and Training:

  • - Prune after blooming to remove spent flowers and shape the plant
  • - Avoid pruning heavily, as Oakleaf Hydrangeas bloom on old wood

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Generally pest-resistant but monitor for aphids, spider mites, and powdery mildew
  • - Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Hardy in USDA zones 5-9
  • - Mulch around the base to retain moisture and protect roots from extreme temperatures

Wonderful Oakleaf Hydrangea

The two Ruby Slipper Oakleaf Hydrangeas I ordered from GrowJoy last spring are growing fast and look very healthy. I planted one in full shade and one in morning sun and afternoon shade, and both are thriving. I planted several Snow Queen Oakleaf Hydrangeas, and the Ruby Slipper Oakleaf Hydrangeas are outperforming them by leaps and bounds. The foliage is just beginning to change to a deep burgundy color, so they are also proving to be quite hardy. The Ruby Slippers is definitely an Oakleaf Hydrangea I recommend.

Beautiful Plants

My Ruby Slippers Oakleaf Hydrangeas arrived in great condition as they were very well packed. I just planted them, so I haven's seen any new growth, but I will return to post a review once they've grown a bit.
