Plant Features

The Abracadabra Star Hydrangea Plant was developed in Dresden, Germany. Its large lacy flowers emerge a variegated milky white with blushing pink edges, and then abracadabra, change to a strong vibrant pink (>7.0 pH) arising on almost black stems. Add aluminum sulfate to force the flowers to turn a startling blue (<7.0 pH) color. Pruning the deadheads right after the flowers fade will ensure prolific flowering every year and will preserve the attractively tidy habit.

Companion Planting: Aster, Astilbe, Dicentra, Viburnum

Planting Instructions:

  • - Best planted in early spring or fall to establish strong roots before extreme temperatures
  • - Space plants 3-5 feet apart to allow for mature size and airflow

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 5.5-6.5 for blue blooms; higher pH (6.5-7.0) for pink blooms
  • - Prefers well-drained, moist soil enriched with organic matter

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish roots
  • - Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy, especially during hot weather

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring
  • - Use fertilizers formulated for acid-loving plants to maintain blue blooms

Pruning and Training:

  • - Prune after blooming to shape the plant and remove spent flowers
  • - Avoid heavy pruning, as flowers develop on old wood for most varieties

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Monitor for pests such as aphids, spider mites, and slugs
  • - Ensure good air circulation to prevent powdery mildew and leaf spot

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Hardy in USDA zones 5-9, depending on the variety
  • - Protect from harsh winter winds; mulch around the base to insulate roots in colder climates
