Physocarpus (Ninebark)

Physocarpus (FĪS-oh-car-pus), commonly known as Ninebark, is a tough, deciduous shrub desired by gardeners for its somewhat fuzzy looking, petite blossoms growing in densely packed clusters, its darkly-colored stems and exfoliating bark, as well as its variety of foliage colors. Its foliage colors include deep purple, bronze, gold, and green. In late spring to early summer, the Ninebark shrub produces clusters of small, white or pink flowers that attract pollinators, followed by small red seed capsules that persist into the fall and winter, providing a source of sustenance for your overwintering song birds. The peeling, layered bark becomes more prominent in winter, as does the arching structure of its bare limbs; Ninebark is a shrub for all seasons! Physocarpus shrubs thrive in full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil and are also highly adaptable to a range of soil types.
