Osmanthus (Sweet Olive)

Osmanthus (ŎZ-man-this) is a little-known, broad-leafed, evergreen shrub highly cherished for its intensely sweet, jasmine-scented flowers amid dark, glossy foliage. Osmanthus, sometimes called False Holly, due to its leathery-looking, pointed leaves, produces oodles of clusters of petite, waxy-looking, 4-petalled blossoms in late summer to early fall. This shrub, also called Sweet Tea Olive, is used in China to flavor green tea and features clustered flowers of white, orange or yellow, nestled among its wonderfully verdant, dark, glossy green leaves. Osmanthus fragrans is also commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine and cuisine. Sweet Olive can be grown as a shrub or small tree, depending upon how you prune it.
