Elaeagnus (Silverberry)

Elaeagnus (el-ee-AG-nis) is a versatile and hardy shrub known for its silvery foliage, fragrant blossoms, and resilience in challenging conditions. Depending upon the variety, they can be deciduous or evergreen, thorny or not, and seedless or not. The seedless varieties are considered non-invasive. There are a few aspects that are true across all Silverberry varieties; one is the silvery-green foliage, slightly ruffled on the edges with cinnamon colored flecks on the underside, the second is the fact that the Eleaganus shrub (or small tree) is amazingly adaptable to just about every environmental condition you can throw at it, including pollution and salt. The third is that the barely noticeable flowers are extremely fragrant, sometimes described as gardenia-like, which is quite heavenly. Ideal for hedges, windbreaks, or foundation plantings, Silverberry thrives in full sun to part shade; its adaptability makes it ideal for urban or coastal gardens. Got deer? No problem!
