Plant Features

Asao Clematis is renowned for its large, star-shaped flowers, each with deep rosy-pink sepals adorned with a white central bar and yellow stamens. Blooming profusely in late spring to early summer, with a second flush in late summer to early fall, Asao adds a touch of elegance to any garden setting. Its compact habit makes it ideal for small gardens and containers, perfect for adding vertical interest to trellises, arbors, or fences. It is a Japanese cultivar introduced in 1971 by Kazushige Ozawa, named after the town of Asao in Japan.

Growing Guide
When to Plant Plant when the risk of frost has passed or during any frost-free period when air temperatures are consistently above 45°F. Ensure the root zone stays cool while the vines reach for sunlight
Soil Setup Thrives in loose, well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0
Watering Tips Soak in-ground plants deeply 1–2 times weekly (unless rain suffices), keep leaves dry if evening; keep containers moist, up to twice daily in heat
Feeding Your Plants Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting. Follow up with a low-nitrogen fertilizer (10-30-20) every 4 weeks during the growing season to promote strong flowering
Shaping & Support Provide a trellis, arbor, or other sturdy support for climbing. Minimal shaping is needed, but light pruning can be done as needed. Can be pruned using Group 2 methods
Pest & Disease Control Generally pest-free, but good airflow and proper care help maintain plant health
Temperature Tolerance Cold-hardy and can withstand temperatures down to -30°F
Companion Plants Pair with Roses for a classic garden look, Hydrangeas for contrasting blooms, and Ornamental Grasses to provide a lush backdrop
