Plant Features

The Aurea Nana Barberry is an intensely-colored plant with golden leaves that are noticeable stand-outs. They hold their stunning attractiveness throughout the spring, summer and fall, turning deeper gold, then copper and finally deep red as the brilliant red berries appear. This specimen is grown almost primarily for its foliage colors, producing only small pale yellow, fragrant flowers, though its slightly salt-tolerant nature has our coastal growers planting it for its brilliant color in those sheltered areas out of the way of salty spray.

Planting Instructions:

  • - Can be planted anytime the soil temps are 60F

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 6.0-7.5, tolerates a wide range of soil types
  • - Prefers well-drained soil but can adapt to clay, sandy, or rocky conditions

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water deeply when first planted to establish roots
  • - Once established, drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring if needed
  • - Avoid over-fertilization to maintain compact growth and prevent excessive foliage

Pruning and Training:

  • - Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches
  • - Shape as desired after flowering for a neat appearance

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Generally pest-resistant; watch for aphids or scale insects
  • - Maintain good airflow to prevent powdery mildew or rust in humid climates

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Tolerates both cold winters and hot summers; mulch around the base for root protection
