Planting Instructions:

  • - Plant in spring or fall for optimal root establishment
  • - Space plants 12-18 inches apart to allow for proper growth

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 5.5-7.0
  • - Prefers well-drained, sandy, or rocky soil; thrives in poorer soils

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water sparingly once established, as Eryngium is drought-tolerant
  • - Ensure soil dries out between waterings to prevent root rot

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Minimal fertilizing required; too much fertilizer can reduce flowering
  • - A light application of compost in spring is usually sufficient

Pruning and Training:

  • - Deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering, though seed heads can be left for winter interest
  • - Cut back in late fall or early spring to encourage fresh growth

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Eryngium is generally pest-free and deer-resistant, though ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues
  • - Occasionally watch for aphids or other small insects

Blooming Indicators:

  • - Blooms from mid-summer to early fall with spiky, thistle-like flowers in shades of blue and silver

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Hardy in USDA zones 4-9, tolerates heat and dry conditions

Companion Plants for Eryngium:

  • - Lavender: Complements Eryngium with its fragrant purple flowers and drought tolerance
  • - Echinacea: Pairs beautifully with Eryngium’s spiky blooms, creating a pollinator-friendly garden
  • - Rudbeckia: Adds contrasting color and form alongside Eryngium’s distinctive texture

Big Blue Eryngium

I have ordered several plants from Grow Joy over the last year. My first ever plants ordered were tomatoes, I believe. Every time I wonder plants. They come packaged SO WELL. I'm always impressed. The was they ship plants is fantastic. They also have a wide variety of olants to pick from and even quite a few that are hard to find on other websites. Love. These Eryngiums came packed just as well as ever and didn't look very stressed. We were able to plant them right in the front garden the next day. So far so good: they are growing beautifully. I'll have to update with a picture once they start flowering.
