Plant Features

Black Gamecock Iris Plants is an award-winning member of the Louisiana Irises! Black Gamecock produces huge 6-inch blooms that are a velvety deep purple flowers that unfold into a flat display to boast itself! The bloom time varies by climate, but commonly bloom from spring into midsummer. Black Gamecock ships as a bare root. We like growing from bare roots because they establish quickly, become twice the size of a potted plant in the first season, and eliminate the need for plastic pots (a win for the environment).

Planting Instructions:

  • - Can be planted anytime soil temperatures are above 45°F
  • - Plant rhizomes just below the surface of the soil, ensuring the top is level with or slightly above the surrounding soil
  • - Space plants 12-24 inches apart for proper air circulation

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 6.0-7.0, prefers acidic to neutral, rich, and moist soil
  • - Enrich soil with organic matter, such as compost or peat moss, to improve fertility and water retention

Watering Specifics:

  • - Louisiana Iris thrives in moist to wet conditions; ideal for pond edges or consistently damp areas
  • - Water deeply and regularly, especially during dry spells
  • - Keep soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging in non-boggy areas

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Apply a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) in early spring and again after blooming to encourage strong growth
  • - Organic options like bone meal or fish emulsion are also effective for nutrient-rich soil

Pruning and Training:

  • - Remove spent flower stems and yellowed leaves to keep the plant tidy and healthy
  • - Divide rhizomes every 3-4 years in late summer or early fall to prevent overcrowding and encourage new blooms

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Louisiana Iris is generally pest-resistant but may attract snails or slugs in overly wet conditions
  • - Monitor for fungal diseases in humid climates and ensure good air circulation

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Hardy and tolerates a wide range of temperatures
  • - Provide mulch in winter to protect the root zone in colder climates
