Plant Features

Blauer Heinz Buxus is a variety of English Box or boxwood that is extremely slow-growing and forms a particularly dense, round shrub, even without pruning. The blue-green foliage of this boxwood has a glaucous, or powdery, coating similar to what you might see on red grapes. It gives the deeply-colored foliage a silvery appearance, especially when in bright light, though the more shade, the bluer and deeper the color of the foliage. Use as a low hedge or as a specimen plant in a rock garden.

Companion Planting: Hemerocallis, Echinacea, Liatris, Shrub Roses

Planting Instructions:

  • - Best planted in early spring or fall to allow for root establishment before extreme temperatures
  • - Space plants 1-2 feet apart for hedge formations or 2-3 feet apart for individual bushes

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 6.5-7.5, prefers well-drained, loamy soil
  • - Enhance poor soil with compost or aged manure to improve drainage

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water deeply once a week during the growing season, more often during dry spells
  • - Ensure soil is moist but not soggy, as Boxwood does not like "wet feet"

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Feed with a balanced fertilizer in early spring to support foliage growth
  • - A second feeding in mid-autumn can help prepare the plants for winter

Pruning and Training:

  • - Prune in late winter to early spring before new growth starts
  • - Regular trimming during the growing season helps maintain desired shape and density

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Monitor for pests like boxwood blight, leaf miners, and spider mites
  • - Use appropriate fungicides and insecticides as needed, following label directions

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Hardy in USDA zones 5-9
  • - Mulch heavily in winter to protect roots in colder climates
