Plant Features

Blue Spear Lavender blooms the first year! This English Lavender variety is tall and stately, with blue tinted buds over grey green foliage. Use it for fragrant potpourris, sachets, and soaps. Lavender grows best in full sun locations with well-drained soil. Lavender is a perennial herb that attracts butterflies, is drought tolerant and deters browsing rabbits and deer. It can be grown indoors next to a south facing window. Indoor plants should be watered just as the potting mix starts to dry.

Planting Instructions:

  • - Space plants 18-24 inches apart to allow for mature spread and airflow

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 6.5-7.5, prefers well-drained, alkaline soil
  • - Amend soil with gravel or sand to improve drainage if necessary

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water once or twice a week after planting until plants are established
  • - Mature plants require minimal water, making them suitable for xeriscaping

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Generally does not require fertilizer; excessive nutrients can decrease oil quality and fragrance

Pruning and Training:

  • - Prune in early spring or after flowering to shape the plants and encourage new growth
  • - Remove old, woody stems to maintain health and appearance

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Lavender is generally pest-resistant but watch for fungal issues in humid conditions
  • - Promote good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent disease

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Hardy in USDA zones 5-9
  • - Protect from harsh winter winds and wet conditions to prevent root rot
