Plant Features

Buttercrunch lettuce has thick, tender leaves with a smooth texture and mild, sweet flavor, perfect for fresh salads, sandwiches, and wraps. This butterhead type forms a loose, soft head and is slow to bolt, making it an excellent choice for extended growing. It can be harvested as baby greens for a steady supply of fresh leaves or allowed to mature for full heads. Grown with our natural methods to nurture their strength and flavor, Buttercrunch Lettuce Plants are guaranteed to arrive alive and thriving!

Planting Instructions:

  • - Transplant during any frost-free period when temperatures remain above 45°F

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 6.0-7.0

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water consistently, keeping soil moist but not waterlogged

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Right after transplanting: Use a fertilizer with a higher middle number (phosphorus) to encourage strong root growth. A 12-24-12 formula is ideal, but if that’s not available, look for something like 10-20-10 or 11-22-11. Apply 1 teaspoon per plant, keeping it at least 2 inches away from the stem to prevent root burn.
  • - 7, 14, and 21 days after transplanting: Switch to a fertilizer with a higher first number (nitrogen) to support leafy growth. A 20-10-10 blend is best, but if you can’t find it, look for something similar where the first number is the highest, like 18-9-9 or 21-11-11. Use 1–3 teaspoons per plant, adjusting based on the plant’s health.
  • - Additional option: Apply Neptune’s Fish and Seaweed as a foliar spray to provide extra nutrients and boost plant vigor.

Pruning and Training:

  • - No pruning necessary

Pollination:

  • - Not necessary for leaf production

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Watch for aphids and slugs

Harvesting Indicators:

  • - Harvest in the morning for best flavor

Storage:

  • - Store in the refrigerator for up to a week
