Plant Features

The Cherry Ripe Phygelius Plant is one of the more elegant of this genus. With dark, forest-green to deeper bluish-green foliage, the pendulous blossoms that are reminiscent of the popular lipstick red shade of the 50s, is shown off to absolute perfection. One of the more compact varieties of Cape Fuchsia, this variety is often grown in large containers, as well as in the ground. Makes a beautiful accent bloom for cut flower arrangements!

Planting Instructions:

  • - Best planted in spring after the danger of frost has passed
  • - Space plants 18-24 inches apart to allow room for spreading

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 6.0-7.5, with a preference for slightly acidic to neutral soil
  • - Requires well-drained soil; improve drainage in heavy clay by mixing in compost or sand

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots
  • - Once established, moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from consistent watering in dry periods

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring and again in midsummer for optimal growth
  • - Avoid excessive nitrogen to prevent leggy growth

Pruning and Training:

  • - Cut back spent flower spikes to encourage more blooms
  • - In late winter or early spring, prune hard to maintain shape and stimulate new growth

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Generally pest-resistant but can be susceptible to aphids and slugs
  • - Ensure good drainage and air circulation to prevent root rot and fungal issues

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Mulch around the base to protect roots from extreme cold
