Plant Features

The Henry Eilers Rudbeckia Plant is distinctly different with true yellow flowers bearing striking quilled petals surrounding a dark brown eye. This Black-Eyed Susan will add variety and interest wherever it is planted. We can thank a retired nurseryman, the namesake for this cultivar, for exploring rail remnants in southern Illinois, rail remnants being the only areas of unplowed prairie, a leftover from the 1800s. Without his wandering nature, we may never have been able to enjoy this wonderful Black-Eyed Susan!

Our Rudbeckia Plants are grown with attention to quality and free from harmful chemicals, ensuring they are safe for your garden and beneficial to local wildlife. Guaranteed to arrive healthy and ready to thrive!

Planting Instructions:

  • - Best planted in spring or fall, but can be established in summer with proper watering

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 6.0-7.0

  • - Tolerant of drought once mature, but performs best with consistent moisture

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring
  • - Avoid heavy feeding, as Rudbeckia thrives in lean soil conditions

Pruning and Training:

  • - Deadhead spent flowers to extend blooming season
  • - Cut back to the ground in late fall or early spring to encourage healthy regrowth

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Generally pest and disease resistant, though can occasionally attract aphids
  • - Provide good air circulation to prevent mildew

Blooming Indicators:

  • - Blooms from mid-summer through early fall

Light Requirements:

  • - Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade in hotter climates
