Plant Features

Kentucky Colonel Mint is a variety of spearmint and is most often used in Mint Juleps. It can also be used in teas, jellies, and sauces. Mint is easy to grow and does well in full to part sun locations with moist soil. Plants can be aggressive if planted in the soil. They do great in containers. Pollinators love the flowers. It can be grown indoors within a few feet of a east, south, or west facing window. Indoor plants should be watered just as the potting mix starts to dry.

Planting Instructions:

  • - Space plants 18-24 inches apart as mint spreads rapidly

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 6.0-7.0, prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil
  • - Amend soil with organic matter to improve fertility and moisture retention

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist
  • - Mint thrives in slightly damp conditions but avoid waterlogging

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season

Pruning and Training:

  • - Harvest mint leaves regularly to encourage bushy growth
  • - Cut back mint in late fall to help control its spread

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Monitor for common pests such as spider mites and aphids
  • - Use organic pesticides or introduce beneficial insects as needed

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Mint is adaptable to a range of temperatures, but protect from extreme cold with mulch

Mint is doing well

The Kentucky Mint has grown very nicely. Can't wait to try it. Very fragrant. Some brown spots but it sits under the umbrella of a tree so I think the insects are getting to it.
