It blooms for a long period throughout summer and into fall. With continued deadheading, this cultivar will often bloom through November. The flowers are great for cutting. Perfect for the front of a sunny border! Plants require excellent drainage.

Planting Instructions:

  • - Best planted in spring for optimal root establishment
  • - Space plants 12-18 inches apart to allow for mature growth

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 5.5-6.5
  • - Prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil, rich in organic matter

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water thoroughly when first planted, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged
  • - Once established, Spigelia prefers regular watering, especially during dry periods

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth and blooming
  • - Avoid over-fertilizing, as excessive nutrients can lead to more foliage than flowers

Pruning and Training:

  • - Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering
  • - Cut back in late fall to prepare the plant for winter dormancy

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Generally pest-free but monitor for slugs or snails in damp conditions
  • - Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues

Blooming Indicators:

  • - Blooms from late spring to early summer with tubular red flowers featuring bright yellow throats

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Hardy in USDA zones 5-9, tolerates both heat and humidity once established

Companion Plants for Spigelia:

  • - Ferns: Complements Spigelia’s bright blooms with lush, green fronds
  • - Astilbe: Adds feathery plumes that pair beautifully with Spigelia’s tubular flowers

Little Redhead

I have this plant and i love it. Easy maintenance and so lovely. In full bloom right now. Slow to emerge in spring but once it gets warmer shes full steal ahead.
