Plant Features

Mulato Isleno is a mild chile pepper with heart-shaped, 4-6” long fruit that changes from a dark green to a beautiful dark chocolate as it matures. Excellent for stuffing, roasting and salsa. This is a key ingredient in chile relleno. The fruit can be eaten at either stage and have a sweet but pungent taste to them. Grown with our natural methods to nurture their strength and flavor, Mulato Isleno Pepper Plants are guaranteed to arrive alive and thriving!

Planting Instructions:

  • - Transplant during any frost-free period when temperatures remain above 45°F

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 6.0-6.8

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water deeply, allowing the soil's surface to dry between watering, with increased frequency on hot days

Fertilizer Protocol:

  • - At Transplanting: Use a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) at a rate of 1 tablespoon per plant. Mix it into the soil near the plant and water thoroughly. Apply once at transplant.
  • - First Flower Appearance: Use a phosphorus and potassium-rich fertilizer (5-10-10) at a rate of 1 tablespoon per plant. Apply 6–8 inches from the base and water thoroughly. Apply once when flowering begins.
  • - Every 4 Weeks Thereafter: Use a phosphorus and potassium-rich fertilizer (5-10-10) at a rate of 1 tablespoon per plant. Apply per plant and water thoroughly. Apply every 4 weeks thereafter.

Pruning and Training:

  • - Pruning is not needed

Pollination:

  • - Self-pollinating, but benefit from insect and wind or mechanical movement

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Watch for aphids, flea beetles, and cutworms
  • - Monitor for signs of bacterial spot or other diseases

Harvesting Indicators:

  • - Cut fruits instead of pulling them to prevent plant damage

Storage:
