Plant Features

Persimmon Orange tomatoes are garden beauties, cherished for their huge, vibrant fruits that rival the best heirlooms. This variety produces golden-orange beefsteak tomatoes weighing 1 to 2 pounds, with smooth, firm skin that resists cracking—perfect for slicing into sandwiches, salads, or fresh eating. The flesh is meaty and juicy, offering a mild, sweet tomato flavor with a rich, fruity undertone and few seeds.

Why grow Persimmon Orange? Dating back to the 1800s and said to have been grown by Thomas Jefferson, this indeterminate plant grows vigorously to 4–6 feet with support, yielding a steady crop through the season. Its cracking resistance and robust growth make it a standout for gardeners seeking large, low-acid tomatoes with exceptional taste that thrive until frost.

Grown naturally and pesticide-free, our Persimmon Orange starter plants arrive healthy and ready to flourish in your garden. Nurtured with care, they promise a generous harvest of these stunning, flavorful tomatoes.

Growing Guide
When to Plant Plant when the risk of frost has passed or during any frost-free period when air temperatures are consistently above 45°F. Ensure the root zone stays cool while the vines reach for sunlight
Soil Setup Use loose, well-draining soil, pH 6.0–6.8, with compost or manure (fall prep ideal)
Watering Tips Soak in-ground plants deeply 1–2 times weekly (unless rain suffices), keep leaves dry if evening; keep containers moist, up to twice daily in heat
Feeding Your Plants Apply a balanced fertilizer or our recommended Espoma Tomato-tone at planting and every 3 weeks thereafter
Shaping & Support Prune suckers (side shoots between stem and branches) if desired—it’s optional. Support plants with stakes or cages
Pest & Disease Control Check for tomato hornworms (look for chewed leaves). Watch for blight or fungal issues, and treat with Serenade Garden Disease Control or copper fungicide if needed
When to Harvest Skin yields slightly to finger pressure and fruit reaches its mature color

Tomato

Plants looked great and were securely packaged. Planted them the next day and they never wilted and have doubled in size in a week. I will order for GrowJoy again.

Persimmon Orange Tomato Plant

I purchased the Persimmon Orange Tomato Plant from GrowJoy. As always, the plant I received was in excellent condition. The packaging they use to ship plants in is absolutely remarkable, and it really protects the plant from becoming damaged during shipment. This is the first time for me for growing this variety of tomato plant, so I am anxious to see how well it grows and produces fruit.
