Plant Features

Pinky Winky® Hydrangea is as unusual as is its name. In mid-summer the two-toned flower heads put on quite an exhibition. The flowers emerge white, and then turn pink as the flower spike continues to push white flowers out at the top. The result is a panicle that grows 12 to 16 inches long and will be middling-pink at the bottom and white at the top. This Proven Winners® selection is really stunning. The dark green foliage sets off this display to perfection and it continues to bloom regardless of climate, pH, pruning, or soil. You can even train this variety to grow as a small tree.

Companion Planting: Aster, Astilbe, Dicentra, Viburnum

Planting Instructions:

  • - Best planted in early spring or fall for optimal root establishment
  • - Space plants 4-6 feet apart, depending on the variety and mature size

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 5.8-7.0, tolerating slightly acidic to neutral conditions
  • - Prefers well-drained soil; amend poor soil with compost or organic matter

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish roots
  • - Once established, water during dry periods but avoid waterlogged conditions

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage blooms
  • - Avoid over-fertilizing, as it may result in excessive foliage at the expense of flowers

Pruning and Training:

  • - Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins, as Panicle Hydrangeas bloom on new wood
  • - Remove weak or crossing branches to maintain a strong framework

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Generally pest-resistant but monitor for aphids, spider mites, and powdery mildew
  • - Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Hardy in USDA zones 3-8, depending on the variety
  • - Tolerates cold winters and performs well in full sun or partial shade

Best Hydrangea ever for Northern Climates

This hydrangea is a large very prolific bloomer. A fast grower, mature size is approximately 8'x8'. Blooms starting in Mid June with flowers staying on until frost. Starts out pure white and slowly turns to partially light pink, to rose, then rose gold in late fall. My plant is in zone 3 but trying to find this particular hydrangea is not easy in the nursery's. Excellent cutter. Does not wilt.
