Plant Features

Twilite Prairieblues is another of the wide array of Baptisia plants developed by Dr. Ault at the Chicago Botanical Gardens. The deep purple flower buds are startling accented by brilliant yellow keels and edges, then open to a dusty violet-purple. Blooming a little later than many varieties, this Wild Indigo needs plenty of room to grow, being a pretty large selection when compared to others. In fact, a 3 year old plant can have over 100 flowering stalks, and they are also known to attract butterflies. Very robust, this heat-tolerant False Indigo has bluish-medium-green foliage that is a pleasing background to brightly colored foliage plants or to other flowering perennials and annuals in your landscape.

Our Baptisia Plants are carefully grown without harmful pesticides, ensuring they are safe for your garden and the environment. Guaranteed to arrive alive and thriving!

Planting Instructions:

  • - Can be planted spring, summer, or fall

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 6.0-7.5
  • - Baptisia thrives in poor to moderately fertile soils and does not require rich soil

Watering Specifics:

  • - Once established, Baptisia is drought-tolerant and needs only occasional watering
  • - Avoid overwatering, as Baptisia prefers dry to medium soil moisture levels

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Typically does not require fertilization; Baptisia is a low-maintenance plant

Pruning and Training:

  • - Baptisia generally requires little to no pruning
  • - Cut back stems to the base in late fall or early spring to remove dead foliage

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Baptisia is naturally resistant to most pests and diseases

Blooming Indicators:

  • - Blooms from late spring to early summer, lasting for several weeks

Light Requirements:

  • - Can tolerate light shade, but flowering may be reduced

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Tolerates heat and drought; performs best in well-drained soils

Companion Plants for Baptisia:

  • - Salvia: Their spikes of blue or purple flowers complement Baptisia's blooms
  • - Coreopsis: Adds a splash of yellow with its daisy-like flowers that contrast with Baptisia's foliage
  • - Echinacea: Their sturdy, upright growth and colorful blooms make a great companion to Baptisia
  • - Ornamental Grasses: Their fine texture adds movement and structure to a Baptisia planting
  • - Penstemon: Adds vertical interest with its spikes of tubular flowers
