Bought this kniphofia on a whim on sale in the fall to see if I wanted to add it to my spring planting list. It only had a couple teeny blooms in the fall but completely surprised me and stayed evergreen all winter (zone 7b) in a container on my deck. The grass-like foliage is a nice visual change from all my leafy containers. It started pushing new growth in the spring and put out about 20 blooms in June. I have been deadheading spent stems and I see more blooms coming. Blooms start like little asparagus spears and grow about 18” tall. The blooms are long-lasting. The color is surprising and hard to describe. It’s a soft coral color and has a luminescent quality. I was expecting crayon red - it’s not. But the color is pleasing. I grow mine in full sun in a large pot. It seems to like being a little dry, so I only water it every other day unless we’re in a heat wave. Overall it’s been a surprise find! The evergreen grassy foliage is lovely and the flowers are cool and unlike anything else I have.
