Plant Features

Purple Prince Tulip Bulbs (Tulipa Fosteriana) arrive the earliest of any tulip in pleasing purple shades. A perfect way to welcome spring, tulips are a must have of any bulb garden. They make excellent cut flowers. Let the foliage die back naturally, and they will come back year after year. Recommended spacing for fall planted Purple Prince Tulip bulbs is 3 inches apart at a depth of 4 inches

Planting Instructions:

  • - Plant the Purple Prince tulip bulbs in the fall, ideally about 6-8 weeks before the first hard frost.
  • - Select a site with full sun, receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth.
  • - Prepare the soil by loosening it to a depth of 12 inches, mixing in organic matter such as compost to improve fertility and drainage.
  • - Plant the bulbs 6-8 inches deep, ensuring that the pointed end is facing upwards.
  • - Space the bulbs 4-6 inches apart to allow for proper air circulation and growth.

Soil Preparation:

  • - Tulips prefer well-draining soil; amend heavy or clay soils with sand or peat to enhance drainage.
  • - Aim for a soil pH of 6.0 to 7.0 for optimal health and growth.

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water the bulbs thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil around them.
  • - Maintain consistent moisture throughout the growing season, especially during dry spells.
  • - Reduce watering after the tulips have bloomed and allow the foliage to die back naturally before cutting.

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting time to support healthy growth.
  • - A second application in early spring, as the tulips begin to emerge, can further promote vigor.
  • - Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, as they can lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of blooms.

Pruning and Care:

  • - Deadhead spent flowers promptly to prevent seed formation, directing energy back to the bulb.
  • - Allow foliage to die back naturally to nourish the bulb for next year's bloom.
  • - Once the leaves have turned completely yellow, they can be removed to keep the garden tidy.

Pest Management:

  • - Tulips are generally resistant to pests, but watch for aphids, slugs, or bulb flies.
  • - Insecticidal soap or neem oil can be used if pests are detected.
  • - Ensure good air circulation around the plants to prevent fungal diseases.

Blooming Indicators:

  • - Purple Prince tulips typically bloom in mid to late spring, producing stunning deep purple flowers.
  • - The blooms generally last about 1-3 weeks, depending on environmental conditions.
  • - The plants typically grow 12-18 inches tall, making them ideal for borders, containers, or garden beds.

Light Requirements:

  • - Requires full sun for best results; they can tolerate partial shade, but full sun yields better blooms.
  • - The more sunlight they receive, the healthier the plants will be and the brighter the flowers.

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Hardy in USDA zones 3-7.
  • - Tulips need a cold dormancy period during winter to ensure proper blooming in spring.

Love my purple tulips!

After getting them planted last fall, they grew beautifully this year. Love them.

Very short, not nearly 12 inches

These were a big disappointment - they grew to a maximum of 6 inches, Since I assumed they would grow to the described 12 inches, I planted them among other tulips of similar height, only to have them hidden and obscured by the taller tulips.
