Plant Features

Red Sails lettuce has thick, ruffled leaves with striking burgundy red color and bright green bases, perfect for fresh salads, sandwiches, and adding vibrant color to dishes. This loose-leaf variety produces large, spectacular heads with deeply lobed, frilly leaves that maintain their sweet, tender flavor even in summer heat. Exceptionally bolt-resistant and heat-tolerant, it continues producing quality leaves long after other varieties have given up. Grown with our natural methods to nurture their strength and flavor, Red Sails Lettuce Plants are guaranteed to arrive alive and thriving!

Planting Instructions:

  • - Transplant during any frost-free period when temperatures remain above 45°F

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 6.0-7.0

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water consistently, keeping soil moist but not waterlogged

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Right after transplanting: Use a fertilizer with a higher middle number (phosphorus) to encourage strong root growth. A 12-24-12 formula is ideal, but if that’s not available, look for something like 10-20-10 or 11-22-11. Apply 1 teaspoon per plant, keeping it at least 2 inches away from the stem to prevent root burn.
  • - 7, 14, and 21 days after transplanting: Switch to a fertilizer with a higher first number (nitrogen) to support leafy growth. A 20-10-10 blend is best, but if you can’t find it, look for something similar where the first number is the highest, like 18-9-9 or 21-11-11. Use 1–3 teaspoons per plant, adjusting based on the plant’s health.
  • - Additional option: Apply Neptune’s Fish and Seaweed as a foliar spray to provide extra nutrients and boost plant vigor.

Pruning and Training:

  • - No pruning necessary

Pollination:

  • - Not necessary for leaf production

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Watch for aphids and slugs

great plant for early planting

This lettuce arrived just in time for my early planting. It was thriving, so much so, that the bunnies thought they would snack on it! It produced a lot of great lettuce
