Plant Features

Royal Candles is considered by many to be one of the best upright forms of Veronica. Having a shorter growth habit than many other varieties, the bottom foliage of Royal Candles does not die out as others do. Also the most disease resistant in its family, it produces masses of deep blue flower spikes atop its deep green foliage. Speedwell plants are easy to grow and provide color over several months. They perform best in full to part sun with well-drained soil. Veronica is very attractive to pollinators like butterflies, bees and hummingbirds, and make beautiful cut flowers.

Our Veronica (Speedwell) Plants are carefully grown and free from harmful pesticides, making them a safe and vibrant addition to your garden. Guaranteed to arrive healthy and ready to thrive!

Planting Instructions:

  • - Best planted in spring or fall for optimal root establishment
  • - Space plants 12-18 inches apart to allow for mature growth

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 6.0-7.5
  • - Prefers well-drained soil, tolerates poor or sandy soils

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water thoroughly when first planted, allowing soil to dry between waterings
  • - Once established, Veronica is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth and abundant blooms
  • - Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth with fewer flowers

Pruning and Training:

  • - Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage continuous blooming
  • - Cut back in late fall or early spring to maintain shape and promote fresh growth

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Veronica is generally pest-free but may attract aphids or spider mites in hot, dry conditions
  • - Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues like powdery mildew

Blooming Indicators:

  • - Blooms from late spring through summer with spires of blue, purple, pink, or white flowers

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Hardy in USDA zones 4-9, tolerates heat and cold once established

Companion Plants for Veronica:

  • - Echinacea: Complements Veronica with its bold, daisy-like blooms and vibrant colors
  • - Coreopsis: Offers a continuous display of yellow blooms that contrast beautifully with Veronica’s spires
  • - Salvia: Adds additional vertical interest with spikes of blue or purple flowers
  • - Achillea: Complements Veronica with its delicate clusters of flowers and pollinator appeal
  • - Lavender: Adds a fragrant, drought-tolerant companion that pairs well with Veronica’s bright blooms
