The Shenandoah Panicum (Switch Grass) Plant is one of the brightest and most intense red switch grasses! Shenandoah has blue-green leaves that are tipped in red. Beginning as early as June and continuing as the seasons progress the foliage takes on more and more of a red coloration such that by fall the foliage is a lovely dark purple. Airy red flower panicles emerge in late summer and bloom just above the foliage. Cut plants back in early spring.

Planting Instructions:

  • - Can be planted anytime soil temperatures are above 45°F

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 5.5-7.5, adaptable to various soil types but thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil
  • - Enrich soil with organic matter to improve structure and fertility if planting in poor soil

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water deeply at planting to establish roots
  • - Once established, Shenandoah Panicum is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to promote vigorous growth and enhance the red coloration of the foliage
  • - Avoid over-fertilizing to prevent the plant from losing its upright form

Pruning and Training:

  • - Cut back in late winter or early spring before new growth begins to tidy the plant and encourage fresh shoots
  • - Divide clumps every 3-4 years to rejuvenate growth and control spread

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Shenandoah Panicum is generally pest-free but monitor for rust or fungal issues in overly wet conditions

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Hardy and tolerates a wide range of temperatures
  • - Provide mulch in winter to protect the root zone in colder climates
