Plant Features

Sherbet Cocktail Tall Phlox Plant is the first garden phlox to have yellow in its make-up. Bred by Jan Verschoor, yellowy-green buds emerge from rich maroon-brown bracts and then open with either soft pastel lavender-pink or white centers with yellow edges, forming flower clusters that can look remarkably like rainbow sherbet. Somewhat resembling a hydrangea blossom, the flowers have a slightly waxy appearance and hold up well. Deadheading will prolong the blooming season, and this is one that you want to keep on blossoming to bring the butterflies!

Our Phlox Plants are carefully cultivated without harmful pesticides, ensuring they are a safe and colorful addition to your garden. Guaranteed to arrive healthy and ready to thrive!

Planting Instructions:

  • - Best planted in spring or fall for optimal root establishment
  • - Space plants 18-24 inches apart to allow for mature growth and air circulation

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 6.0-7.0
  • - Prefers rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water deeply when first planted, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged
  • - Once established, water regularly, especially during dry periods, to maintain moisture

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to promote vigorous growth and blooming
  • - Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to weak stems and fewer blooms

Pruning and Training:

  • - Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering throughout the season
  • - Cut back the plant in late fall or early spring to promote fresh growth for the next season

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Phlox can be prone to powdery mildew; ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering
  • - Monitor for aphids and spider mites, which may appear in warm conditions

Blooming Indicators:

  • - Blooms from mid-summer to early fall with clusters of fragrant flowers in shades of pink, purple, white, and red

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Hardy in USDA zones 3-9, tolerates both hot summers and cold winters

Companion Plants for Phlox:

  • - Echinacea: Complements Phlox with its bright, daisy-like flowers and pollinator appeal
  • - Achillea: Adds delicate flower clusters that pair beautifully with Phlox’s colorful blooms
  • - Coreopsis: Provides bright yellow flowers that create a vibrant contrast with Phlox’s hues
  • - Rudbeckia: Offers bold yellow blooms that enhance the summer display of Phlox
  • - Salvia: Adds vertical spikes of blue or purple to contrast with Phlox’s rounded flower clusters
