Planting Instructions:

  • - Choose a location with good air circulation
  • - Thrives in containers or directly in the ground in zones 10-11

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 5.5-6.5
  • - Well-draining, slightly acidic soil

Watering Specifics:

  • - Container soil should not be allowed to dry out
  • - Established plants in soil only need watering if it hasn't rained for a couple of weeks
  • - Reduce watering in winter when growth slows

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring
  • - Apply a phosphorus-rich fertilizer monthly during the growing season to promote flowering
  • - Container plants benefit from additional fertilizer every 3 weeks during the growing season
  • - Avoid over-fertilizing, which can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of blooms
  • - Do not fertilize when overwintering indoors

Pruning and Training:

  • - Prune after flowering to maintain shape and control size
  • - Remove dead or damaged wood in early spring
  • - Train climbing varieties on trellises or support structures
  • - Stems must be tied or attached to supports as bougainvillea cannot climb on its own

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Watch for common pests like aphids, mealybugs, and caterpillars
  • - Monitor for diseases such as leaf spot and root rot, especially in humid conditions

Blooming Indicators:

  • - Blooms most heavily in spring and fall, with sporadic flowering in summer
  • - Flowers appear on new growth, so regular pruning encourages more blooms

Light Requirements:

  • - Can tolerate partial shade, but flowering may be reduced

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Not frost-hardy; protect or bring indoors when temperatures drop below 40°F

Overwintering Instructions:

  • - In regions with freezing temperatures, bring container plants indoors
  • - Before moving inside, trim the plant back to about 24 inches
  • - Place near an east, south, or west-facing window, keeping it a couple of feet away
  • - Avoid placing near heating vents or registers
  • - Let the soil dry between waterings
  • - Do not fertilize during the overwintering period

Sundown Orange Bougainvillea

I have ordered many starter bougainvillea from other nurseries. The 2 I received from growjoy were by far in much better shape. They were larger, healthier, packed much better, and I received them in several days. Looking forward to ordering more next season hopeing for more available colors.

Sundown Orange - Very Vivid & Beautiful!

I love bougainvillea, and the assortment of colors GrowJoy has to offer is top notch. These arrived packaged very well and were already thriving. They're small upon arrival, but with a little fertilizer, sunlight and water, you'll see an exceptional amount of growth within just a few weeks!

Sundown Orange Bougainvillea

Three of these plants were received in excellent condition - very healthy and full. They have been planted and are growing strong, but have not yet started to put on color. I’ve no doubt they will look spectacular on the trellis next to the front entryway. Zone 8B San Antonio Texas area.
