Plant Features

Living up to the spirit of its name, the Hibiscus Vintage Wine does get better with time with black buds that unfurl to reveal huge, scarlet red blooms. Although each bloom only lasts for one day, the bush generously produces several new blooms each day - for a show that lasts well into the fall. The romantic effect of the deep red blooms against the heart shaped green leaves make it an eye catching addition to any outdoor space. Hardy Hibiscus plants thrive in full sun locations with moist-wet, nutrient rich soil. Stems should be cut back in late winter. They are late to break ground in the spring.

Our Hardy Hibiscus Plants are carefully grown without harmful pesticides, ensuring they are a safe and vibrant addition to your garden. Guaranteed to arrive healthy and ready to thrive!

Planting Instructions:

  • - Best planted in spring or early summer for optimal root development
  • - Space plants 3-4 feet apart to allow for mature growth and proper air circulation

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 6.0-7.5
  • - Prefers moist, well-drained soil; thrives in rich, organic soil but tolerates average conditions

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water deeply and regularly, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil consistently moist
  • - Mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture and maintain even soil temperature

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to encourage vigorous growth and flowering
  • - Feed again in mid-summer to support continuous blooming

Pruning and Training:

  • - Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged stems
  • - Cut back to the ground in late fall after the plant has gone dormant to encourage fresh growth next spring

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Hardy Hibiscus is generally pest-resistant but may attract aphids or Japanese beetles; monitor and treat if necessary
  • - Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases

Blooming Indicators:

  • - Blooms from mid-summer to early fall with large, showy flowers in shades of red, pink, white, or purple

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Hardy in USDA zones 4-9, tolerates both heat and cold, but may need protection in colder regions

Companion Plants for Hardy Hibiscus:

  • - Echinacea: Complements Hibiscus with its bright, daisy-like blooms
  • - Achillea: Pairs beautifully with Hibiscus’ large flowers for a striking contrast
  • - Rudbeckia: Adds bright yellow blooms that enhance the bold colors of Hibiscus
  • - Lavender: Provides a fragrant, low-growing companion that complements Hibiscus blooms
  • - Coreopsis: Offers a continuous display of yellow flowers that pairs well with Hibiscus

Fine Vintage Wine

Well-packed, good sized plant for a 2.5 inch pot, and the little rascal is blooming today despite the fact that I haven't got it into the ground in 2 weeks.
