Planting Instructions:

  • - Best planted in early spring or fall for optimal root establishment
  • - Space plants 12-18 inches apart to allow for mature growth

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 5.5-7.0
  • - Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil; tolerates sandy or poor soils

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water deeply when first planted, allowing the soil to dry between waterings
  • - Once established, Lupine is drought-tolerant but appreciates consistent moisture during dry spells

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Lupines prefer lean soil; avoid heavy fertilization, which can result in leggy growth
  • - A light application of compost in early spring is usually sufficient

Pruning and Training:

  • - Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering
  • - Cut back the plant in late fall or early spring to tidy up and promote new growth

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Lupine is generally pest-free but may attract aphids or slugs in damp conditions
  • - Ensure good air circulation to prevent powdery mildew and other fungal issues

Blooming Indicators:

  • - Blooms from late spring to early summer with tall spikes of vibrant, pea-like flowers in a variety of colors

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Hardy in USDA zones 4-9, tolerates heat and cool temperatures, but prefers cooler climates

Companion Plants for Lupine:

  • - Salvia: Adds vertical spikes of blue or purple that pair well with Lupine’s colorful blooms
  • - Echinacea: Complements Lupine’s height and color with its vibrant, daisy-like flowers
  • - Coreopsis: Offers a continuous display of yellow blooms that blend beautifully with Lupine’s spikes
  • - Achillea: Complements Lupine with its delicate flower clusters and pollinator appeal
  • - Rudbeckia: Adds bold yellow flowers that enhance the vibrant colors of Lupine

Tough Plants!

Due to my now 92 yo father's health conditions, planting my order which was received in late Spring, these and my other plants sat on the driveway with the only attention being watering until this week (eo July!). They are small (expected) but very healthy! So pleased they are healthy and growing in spite of the neglect. They should be well established by the end of the growing season and maybe (?) flower next year.

Westcountry Red Rum Lupine

Ordered two of these Red Rum Lupine plants and they arrived healthy and very good size. So happy! They will need to grow a bit before producing bloom stems but the wait will be worth it!! Thank you Grow Joy!
